Ochtodes Sp. Marine Macro Algae

Light
The Blue Ochtodes macro algae prefers good light, but not too much. Its deep blue colour is best to reach with a 6500k-10000k light. With direct sunlight or out of the water it will turn brown.  When you receive these algae it will look brown,  but once back in the marine water it will get its colour back, varying in blue / purple shades, depending on what kind of light and how much light the Blue Ochtodes gets.

Palatable
The whole algae are very tasty for herbivore marine fishes, like the Foxfish, Tang species etc. Therefore it is recommended to keep this marine alga in a safe area for a reserve until you like to offer it as additional food to your fishes.

Attaching
This algae will attach itself when left for example on the rock for a few days without movement. Keep an eye on floating bits of it in your tank as they will do the same when they get the chance too.

Trimming
Whitish parts of this macro algae should be removed as they are decomposing.

Treatment
Like for most marine macro algae a higher level of Nitrate and Phosphate, in addition to the supplement of Iron, Magnesium and Trace elements will improve the growth of this marine algae.

Please note
We go do our best to quarantine, treat and remove any unwanted hitchhikers, parasites etc from our macro algae. But we can not guarantee that the algae are completely free of anything unwanted. This is simply because that sometimes eggs, spores, etc can remain viable but not visible and hitchhikers can be still stay hidden in dense algae structures, despite our strict quarantine efforts.
We highly recommend therefore that you properly quarantine anything new before adding it to your marine tank.

Do I need to glue it, or how will it stay in the bottom of my tank Answer:
This macro algae will attach itself within 2-3 days when it gets good light to rock etc. We recommend to leave it for this time on a small piece of rock or similar in an area without strong current. If you don't have such an area in your aquarium use some rubber band or place in in between some rockwork to hold it in place until it has attached itself. We don't recommend just to place it on a fine sandbed, as it needs something to attach itself to stay in place. We hope this helps. Kind regards Livealgae UK

Hello. I received last week the algae, it looks really nice. But the colour looks more pink in my tank. My water parameters are good. I have around 5 Nitrate and 0.03 Phosphate. How do I get a more blue colour please? Answer:
Hello Marie. Thank you for your question and we are happy that you like the macro algae. The colour of the Blue Ochtodes depends of the light you provide. We have best experiences with full spectrum lighting, around 6500k. When it gets direct sunlight the algae tends to become more purple. Although the algae likes good light it will show a deeper blue colour when it gets a medium strong light. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to contact us.

It arrived quickly but this algae is falling apart and scatters everywhere in the tank. It made my tank so messy. So, I really do not like it. It also looks like brown/light green rather than purple/blue.

Shop owner reply (May 25, 2018):
We are sorry to hear that you are not happy with this algae.
Its colour will be brown when it gets in contact with air but once back in the marine water it will change its colour back to blue/purple, depending what light you provide.
It turns white/clear and turns soft when it is decomposing, these parts should be removed.

It is not normal for this alga that it will break in pieces, once in the tank ( It might happen so in transport, but it will reattach within a few days when left in an area with good light, but no current easily).
We have it in one of our tanks even close to a powerhead and it is growing well and stays in place.

So we wonder why this happened to you. If you like please contact us via email or phone and we will try to figure out why this happened to you. Your current water parameters would be very helpful for this, especially your Nitrate, Phosphate, Salinity, Alkalinity, PH and Magnesium/Calcium levels.

Kind regards

Manfred

Looks more purple in my tank

Shop owner reply (May 24, 2018):
The colour of it will vary depending how much light it gets ( where you place it in your tank ) and what light spectrum you use. If you have further questions regarding this please don't hesitate to contact us.

Broken in transit

It arrived in a few pieces.

Shop owner reply (May 9, 2018):
Hi.

The Ochtodes is a quite fragile alga, and although we try to pack it carefully it can break in transit.

But once back in your tank, just place them together in an area of your aquarium without a current but good light, and it will attach itself together normally within 2-3 days again.

I hope this helps.
Kind regards

It arrived fast but I thought it would be in one piece.
It looks more brown too, which was mentioned So i hope it will change it colour to blue again.

Shop owner reply (Feb 6, 2018):
HI.
Thank you for ou review.

Unfortunately, it might happen that the Blue Ochtodes breaks in transit, depending on how they get handled by Royal Mail.
But once you add them to your tank just leave them in an area without strong current and good light for 2-3 days and they will grow back together to one piece.

We hope you enjoy it.
