The brown macroalgae ( Phaeophyceae ) are mostly found in more colder Northern Hemisphere waters, most often in the form of various kelp species.

For the marine aquarium, they don't play an important role and are more often seen as unwanted algae pests which come with live rock as hitchhikers.

Worldwide are about 1500-2000 species known. Responsible for the colour is the pigment fucoxanthin.

All the algae we sell are from our special Algae Tanks setups which are kept without any fishes for a disease-free and premium quality. This said, they might come with hitchhikers not limited to Copepods and Rotifers, as those beneficial critters love the protected environment of our planted marine tanks.
