Ulva Lactuca or often called Sea Lettuce is a very palatable macroalgae which makes it a great natural food source for herbivore fishes like Tang & Foxface. With its thin leaves in different green shades it will look just amazing in any reef tank whilst offering a natural grow place for copepods and rotifers.
Use with caution in oral reef tanks. Not for ultra low nutrients tanks, as it might get stressed and spread in the marine tank. Best placed in dedicated macroalgae tanks or marine tanks with herbivore fishes which will consume it. Please read more about this macroalgae below.
This macro algae will arrive unattached. If you prefer it already attached to a zoa cone please add the amount of cones you need HERE.
Ulva Lactuca Marine Macroalgae
Premium Marine Macro algae for the Planted Reef Display Tank & Refugium for sale on Live Algae UK.
Your 1st choice for clean Marine Macroalgae from Fish & Copper free tanks since 2014.
Ulva is rich in B12 vitamins and minerals and consists of 33% proteins and 36% dietary fibre, plus magnesium, Iron and Zing. A perfect healthy food source for your herbivore fishes like various Tang species.
Ulva Lactuca is from our experience n general a quite stable macroalgae and a perfect food source for herbivore fishes. There are opinions and obviously experiences that it can become very invasive and overgrow rockwork etc.
This said we have this macroalgae for more than 10 years in our tanks and it stays generally just in the place we have it for growing. Just once in all the years it was spreading, as the tank ran out of nitrate.
This said we do not recommend this macroalgae for ultra low nutrients tanks.
It is rather a great macroalgae addition for reef tanks with herbivorous fishes in it which will eat this macroalgae ( whilst it can grow for example in the sump ) or for dedicated marine macroalgae tanks.
The Ulva Lactuca macroalgae prefers a medium strong light aquarium environment. When it gets too much light the leaves of this marine algae will become more thin, and with less light more thick.
This macro algae is VERY palatable and a great natural source for your herbivorous fishes etc. Especially a lot of Tank species love to eat this marine algae, so keep some of the Ulva algae for example in the sump/refugium to let it grow back again.
As it eventually will attach itself to rock after a long time, we recommend to start with to glue it on a piece of rock to keep it in position. It is very easy to trim by just removing the excessive algae. It forms smooth discs and grows in larger chunks, which can attach themselves to rock etc. This macroalgae may spread in your tank through water circulation and pop up in different laces. But it is quite easy to remove unwanted growth.
Clear parts of this algae should be removed as they are decomposing.
Like for most marine macroalgae a higher level of Nitrate and Phosphate, in addition to the supplement of Iron, Magnesium and Trace elements will improve the growth of this live algae.
If the macroalgae is not growing as expected a special formulated fertiliser for the marine aquarium can help to improve the growth of the macroalgae. Please find a selection of supplements for the marine aquarium HERE
It is often known as Sea Lettuce and very popular for human consumption as a salad etc. But we sell these algae just to use in the marine aquarium as we use fertilser to grow them and they are not certified for human consumption.
Our macroalgae are from fish free macro algae tanks, although we use sometimes pictures for demonstration purposes only which will include fishes, seahorses and or corals.
We do our best to quarantine, treat and remove any unwanted hitchhikers, parasites etc from our macro algae but we can not guarantee that the algae are completely free of anything unwanted, not limited to Copepods, Rotifers etc. This is simply because that sometimes eggs, spores, etc can remain viable but not visible and hitchhikers can still stay hidden, especially in dense algae structures, despite our strict quarantine efforts.
We highly recommend nonetheless that you properly quarantine anything new before adding it to your marine tank.
